UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON WEST CAMPUS HOUSING RESIDENCE HALLS

Owner: University of Washington
Client: Mahlum Architects
SvR Role: Civil Engineering
SvR Fee: $650,000
Start Date: 2008
End Date: 2012

SvR provided civil engineering services for this 1,700-student, four-building housing expansion. As the first step in the University’s planned expansion into the neighboring residential district, the project will serve as a model for the University’s future sustainable integration into the existing urban fabric. SvR led the design of elements within the sites and streetscape, as well as the design of utility connections and 13 blocks of frontage improvements. Frontage improvements encompass a major transit hub; a bicycle lane on Brooklyn; a green street, which will connect with the Burke-Gilman Trail and ADA accessibility enhancements, including replacement of 40 curb ramps and installation of curb bulbs.

The buildings were intended to meet the energy requirements of the AIA 2030 Challenge and attain USGBC LEED certification. To date, one building has obtained a gold rating and one a silver.
