As the civil engineer for the City of Seattle’s Municipal Civic Center, SvR helped reinforce the City’s commitment to sustainable design. The project features a new City Hall, Justice Center, and open spaces that tie together City offices and create an urban center suited to public gathering and a variety of civic activities.

As sustainable design was a driving factor in this project, SvR designed a system that harvests, stores, and uses rainwater to supply water features and irrigate the landscape. We researched and prepared a design report detailing green roof options used at the Justice Center. The City Hall and Civic Plaza projects were awarded LEED Gold. The Justice Center earned LEED Silver.

Our work began in the Master Planning phase and continued through to construction. We collaborated with the City, and a series of architects and landscape architects on this project to solve engineering challenges while maintaining the cohesive vision for this downtown campus. Additional work included preparation of Seattle Private Contract Plans detailing improvements to right-of-way, utilities, and sidewalks.
