The North Cascades Environmental Learning Center, which is operated by the North Cascades Institute under a joint agreement between the National Parks Service and Seattle City Light, serves as a residential education center that provides programs on the natural and cultural environments of the Pacific Northwest. Providing civil engineering and landscape architecture services, SvR designed storm drainage, utility, and infrastructure improvements for this expansion project. The project included the remodel of existing buildings and the construction of new facilities.

SvR designed improvements to minimize disruption of the site, maintain the natural setting, separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and reuse existing facilities to the greatest extent possible - all while meeting budget constraints. Interpretive and educational features were incorporated into the design. The project involved extensive stakeholder input in the form of charrettes and meetings.
